Fire Station No. 1 is a 3-story, hurricane-hardened 911 emergency operations center designed to withstand extreme weather while still maintaining critical services. The 25,000 SF facility features four elevated drive-through apparatus bays and 14 dormitories. To mitigate the risks of flooding in its low-elevation site, the apparatus bay was elevated 11 feet above the base flood elevation. The station’s façade features a unique steel-plate mural, which required a concealed steel skeleton for support. This structure anchors the mural to the building while efficiently transferring wind loads and its weight back to the main frame. The project also introduced a precast cantilevered floating stair and added concrete canopies. An existing bus-stop-like structure was relocated, entailing foundations and coordination to accommodate existing landscape structures around it.
