The Lighthouse Learning Center for Children provides a first-of-its-kind pre-kindergarten program. Blind and visually impaired children from communities throughout Miami-Dade can attend alongside sighted classmates from the nearby Brickell neighborhood. The four-story building also houses innovative intervention programs for youngsters from birth through four years old and features a child-oriented environment with a wide array of tactile experiences. The classrooms and offices sit atop three levels of structured parking. The 2016 building connects to an existing structure in two locations.
A 29,284-SF, five-story expansion added to the Lighthouse’s Little Havana campus by adding classroom and office spaces plus three levels of covered parking. Design features, which align with Miami Lighthouse’s mission of serving the visually impaired of all ages, include use of Braille in signage and elevators. Three stair towers leading to specific locations will help students exit
the building safely. The campus also includes a playground and green space where students can learn orientation and mobility skills and play in a safe
environment. The 2020 expansion ties in with the adjacent building while
keeping all facilities operational throughout the expansion project.
